At 50 mpg, the 2010 Toyota Prius is a game changer

Of the 12 million barrels of oil we import daily, the 6 million barrels we get from OPEC members are the most geopolitically dubious. That oil from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is refined into about 83 million gallons...

Do You Want 60-Plus MPG? Drive a New Prius

With hybrids getting closer to mainstream, they’re just going to embarrass what we once considered conventional cars. It’s a tad longer (0.6-in. overall) than the car it replaces. Its dohc 16-valve engine is larger (1.8 liters versus the previous 1.5)...

Solar Roof

In addition to the available power tilt-and-slide moonroof with auto open-and-close functionality, the roof available in the 2010 Prius is embedded with solar panels. When the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight, these solar panels power a fan that brings in outside air, ventilating the cabin close to the ambient temperature. The cool technology continues with a button on the key fob that activates the air conditioning system within 30 yards of the vehicle. The cabin will cool to the pre-set temperature level, without turning on the engine.

Touch Tracer

The instrument panel projects a virtual duplicate of each button pressed on the steering wheel Touch Tracer. With only the slight touch of a thumb, the touch-sensitive tracer adjusts cabin temperature, audio mode, stereo volume and energy consumption as it displays each on the instrument panel.

Instrument Panel

A fully integrated Vacuum Fluorescent Display on the instrument panel provides a digital readout of real-time mpg, vehicle speed, past-trip fuel consumption, battery-charge level, energy flow from gas to electric motor, and when equipped, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Pre- Collision System (PCS) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA). The display is positioned in your line of sight, in the uppermost part of the dash, to help reduce eye fatigue and can be controlled with Touch Tracer on the steering wheel.

Eco, Power & EV Modes

Because not all drivers are the same, the 3rd generation Prius comes with three different additional driving modes. Each mode allows for more or less gas pedal responsiveness, depending on your driving preference. When ECO Mode is selected, the gas pedal sensitivity is reduced to maximize fuel economy. The EV Mode drives solely on battery power for up to one-half mile under certain conditions. The Power Mode increases the gas pedal sensitivity and provides a more responsive driving experience. In all modes, maximum acceleration is the same.

Pre-Collision System

The available Pre-Collision System is equipped with a front-mounted radar that constantly monitors the distance of the vehicle ahead. When the PCS Computer determines a high probability of a frontal collision, it preemptively adjusts the brake pressure so that increased braking force is available the moment the brake pedal is pressed. If the system determines a collision is imminent, it retracts the front seatbelts and applies the brakes to help lessen the severity of impact.

LED Headlamps

The available headlamps in the 3rd generation Prius utilize LED technology in order to consume less energy and produce more light. LEDs provide instant illumination and are able to retain 90% luminance over their 15-year life span.
