Winter Planting Begins At The School Garden Project

Toyota Hollywood employees along with Helen Bernstein High School
students began their Winter planting today with Kale, Brussels sprouts,
beets, onions, carrots, turmeric and chives. The parent volunteers and
students also did an amazing job with “garden maintenance” by pulling
all those darn weeds and making it easier for us to plant today. Thank
you! Just look at the photos – the garden is so alive!

In addition to their many responsibilities as students, the Garden Club
has offered to donate the garden vegetables to needy families of Helen
Bernstein HS.

Toyota of Hollywood’s School Garden is in Full Bloom

Toyota of Hollywood’s school garden at Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood is in full bloom with fruits, vegetables, California native drought tolerant plants and beautiful rose bushes outlining the amazing garden space. Throughout the summer, teachers, students and Toyota Hollywood employees will maintain the garden and make plans for Fall planting.

One objective of the garden was to develop an activity guide to help teachers integrate nutrition education, specifically as it relates to fruit and vegetables, into their curriculum. School gardens provide opportunities for hands-on learning activities that are vital in nutrition education. Gardens can be used to teach children about the origin of fruit and vegetables and give them opportunities to practice preparing fruits and veggies, while living a healthy lifestyle.

More importantly, having this garden and the freedom to get their hands dirty has given the students new opportunities to gain confidence and learn life-long lessons as they grow along with their plants.

Rachelle Lefevre Visits Helen Bernstein High School Garden

It had been nearly a year since EMA Young Hollywood Board Member Rachelle Lefevre’s last visit to Helen Bernstein High School’s garden, and a lot had changed (and grown!) since then.

Rachelle toured the garden and got her hands dirty by digging in.
